I just finished reading "Kabul Beauty School" by Deborah Rodriguez. I just couldn't put the book down, maybe because I haven't read anything like it in a long time. The easy reading, interesting story and sub-stories, cultural awakenings, and come-to-life characters made this book memorable.
In a nutshell:
Debbie, a hairdresser from Michigan, visits Afghanistan and is so humbled by the experience that she helps to open and run a beauty school and salon for the local women. And we all know that salons are breeding grounds for gossip and girl talk, so expect to read years worth of gossip in under 200 pages.
Her story, as well as those of the Afghan women, has inspired me.
